They held it for nearly 49 years, until 1809. However, the misl's financial position deteriorated over time, and by 1809, Amritsar was ruled by a minor ruler, Gurdit S. Bhangi, a descendant of Gujjar Singh, with the assistance of his mother, Mai Sukhan. Mai Sukhan asked Arur Mal, a sahukar (trader) in Bhangi township, to pay nazrana (Tribute). Arur Mal, unable to pay, relocated to Kanhiyas misl's township to avoid payment. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a rising star from the Sukerchakia Misl at the time. The Maharaja took control of the Fort, and with it, the Zamzama Cannon, Mai Sukhan, and the Bhangies were given a few villages to maintain.
